Legislative Updates

Legislative Update - October 12th, 2007

Dear Neighbors,

There are a few community opportunities about which I want to make you aware. If you have any questions, ideas or general feedback about what's happening at the legislature or in the community, please call, write or email. Thanks!

My best,
Jeremy

NORTH BRANCH WATER & LIGHT GIVES AWAY 5 CFL BULBS

>From Russell Good, General Manager of North Branch Water and Light
651-674-7100

"For those of you who do not already know it, I am the general manager at North Branch Water & Light. October 7 to October 13 is the nationwide celebration of Public Power Week. This year marks the 27th anniversary of the observance. Public Power is provided in the state of Minnesota by more than 100 municipal utilities.

In recognition of that observance, North Branch Water & Light will be giving each of our electrical customers who stop in the office five (5) FREE CFL light bulbs. Some of you have already gotten your bulbs when you paid your bill. There are no rebate forms for these bulbs. No paper work at all. Just a smile and the bulbs for you to take home and use. You can use the rebate forms we have available for bulbs you wish to use beyond the original five from us. Several of the local stores are participating in the plan.

You probably already know that CFL bulbs use only about 25 percent of the electricity that a regular incandescent bulb uses, so we hope you use these bulbs to help keep your light bill lower, and that helps us keep our costs for power down, too. And we all know that less power usage will keep the electric generation from emitting more gases to the atmosphere."

SMALL "SEED MONEY" FUNDING FOR COMMUNITY INITIATIVES

>From Maggie Kuusisto, United Way Coordinator for Chisago County
651-583-2824, maggiek@frontiernet.net

SEEDS are Small Endowments Encouraging Developmental Success. SEEDS grants range from $500-$1,000.00 and are usually one-time collaborative projects. These funds are available all year round, the application is very simple and the review rocess can be done in a little over 1 month. The main requirement is that they fit within United Ways guidelines of their 3 Impact Areas: Basic Needs, Supporting Health and Independence, and Children and Families.

Initaitive money is money we have every year to spend on projects that fit in the 3 Impact Areas and look like they may grow into something ongoing or are simply an excellent project. This month we are funding the Operation Community Connect in both Isanti and Chisago.

"BAIL" ME OUT TO SUPPORT NORTH BRANCH FAMILY PATHWAYS FOOD SHELF

Sarah Callin, manager of the North Branch Family Pathways food shelf, has placed me in "jail," until I can raise $250 for the local food shelf. (She even made me wear an inmate's shirt - just to be sure I got the message!) All of the proceeds will go directly to purchase food for the North Branch food pantry. To contribute, you can reply to this email, call me at home, or send a check to my home address below.

At our wedding, rather than give out little parting gifts, Hope and I made a small donation to one of three charities. Each guest chose the one they preferred, one of which was Family Pathways. They do a great job of supporting those most in need, especially as the weather gets a certain chill in the air.

The Chisago Lakes Lions Club will also host their pancake/french toast breakfast this Sunday, Oct. 14, at the Chisago Lakes High School, from 8 am to 1 pm, with all the proceeds going to the Family Pathways Foodshelf.
