Legislative Updates

Legislative Update - November 6th, 2007

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

My apologies for sending two emails in two days. I want to be sure anyone directly impacted by the 35W bridge collapse gets this notice about Friday's hearing at the State Capitol.

My colleague, Rep. Dennis Ozment (R-Rosemount), sent the following letter today. Written testimony from bridge survivors can be sent to Rep.Dennis.Ozment@House.mn or to Sen.Ron.Latz@Senate.mn.

My best,
Jeremy

"Hello Everyone,

Sen. Latz, who will be chairing the Joint House/Senate Subcommittee on Claims meeting on Friday, Nov. 9 from 9:00 a.m. to 5 p.m., room 123 of the Capitol, would like to extend an invitation regarding potential claims arising from the I-35W Bridge Collapse. The subcommittee has been gathering information since the bridge collapse to objectively evaluate the pros and cons of the many options the state has in responding to the bridge collapse. The subcommittee is bi-partisan and bi-cameral and has been working with the Governor's office as well regarding the agenda.

Ken Feinberg, who was appointed to serve as the Special Master of the September 11 Victim Compensation fund by then U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft, will attend the Claims Subcommittee meeting. He will discuss his experiences with the 9/11 fund and the Virginia Tech shooting cases. Feinberg is scheduled to testify during the morning portion of the hearing. He will offer insight and recommendations as how the state should handle claims arising out of the 35W Bridge collapse.

Others invited to testify at the morning portion of the hearing include: House and Senate Counsel Staff members, representatives from the Department of Commerce, the Department of Administration, the Department of Transportation and the Attorney General’s office. Two bridge collapse survivors will testify at 1 p.m. as well as the lawyers representing the survivors. The hearing will wrap up with testimony from representatives from the Minnesota Association of Justice, Minnesota Defense Lawyers Association and the Minnesota Bar Association.

Please feel free to contact any of the bridge survivors that have contacted your office and let them know about the hearing. The subcommittee would welcome any submission of written testimony.

Rep. Dennis Ozment, Co-Chair
Joint Subcommittee on Claims"
